Market Research

Before you start designing logos and googling suppliers, you need to understand what market you’re getting into. First, identify your niche. It can be anything, but it helps to pick a category you’re familiar with. Are you into health and fitness? Maybe that’s a good category to sell in.

Once you’ve identified a niche, start to look for products that customers want in that market. Start by looking at best sellers in that category on Amazon to see what people are buying, then choose a specific product like boxing gloves to sell. Once you’ve chosen your product, go through the reviews of your future competitors and look for common themes. Maybe people complain about the quality. Maybe they’re asking questions about which type of glove they need because they don’t know much about it. Maybe there’s a market for smaller sizes or larger sizes that’s being missed. You can fill the gap in the market with your product.

Next, do some keyword research. The simplest way to start is by using Amazon’s auto-suggest feature. Type relevant terms, like “boxing gloves small” in our example, into the Amazon search bar and write down the suggestions. These are keywords that other customers are probably using. You can also use third party tools (affiliate??) and look at your competitors’ listings to see what keywords they’re consistently using.

Finally, look at your competition in the space. How many relevant products show up when you search your targeted keywords? How many sellers are there in the general category? Are there a lot of big players in the space? You may want to consider a different product if the market is crowded with options.

Find a Supplier

The process of finding a supplier for your private label product includes seeking out potential suppliers, evaluating product quality and their experience in the industry, negotiating terms, placing a small test order, establishing a long term contract, and monitoring performance and quality over time. You can find suppliers through online directories, like Alibaba and Global Sources, at trade shows, or through industry events. Ask potential suppliers about their experience, pricing, minimum order quantities, and product quality. Once you find a supplier that meets your needs, negotiate terms for a pilot and place a test order. If the test order meets your expectations, move forward with a long term agreement and start planning quantity. Even after you launch, make sure to monitor the quality at a regular cadence to avoid consumer issues. It’s always a good idea to have a lawyer review supplier agreements, SellersBasics is a great service for amazon sellers to get legal advice for a monthly fee rather than paying hourly.

Build a Brand

Creating a brand requires a unique brand identity to differentiate yourself from your competitors. Start by choosing a brand name that appeals to your audience and creating a logo. There are designers on Fiverr and Etsy that create logos for affordable prices. Translate your logo and branding into packaging that reflects your brand image.

Next, develop a brand story that is relatable for your target audience and helps to differentiate your product from others. Connect with customers in messages, reviews, and social channels to build your reputation and customer base. Be sure to maintain your quality to solidify your brand over time. Protect your brand once it’s finalized! You need to register the name and marks as a trademark, and monitor for counterfeits as you grow.

List Your Product

Once you have a product and brand, it’s time to list it on Amazon. If you don’t already have an Amazon Seller account you can create it here. Select the category that your product falls into and Use Amazon’s listing tool to create your listing. You’ll need the name, brand, model number, a detailed product description, and high quality images for the listing. Once you’ve added all of your details, set a price and choose your shipping options. You can use FBA (fulfilled by Amazon) or FBM (fulfilled by merchant) shipping. When you have everything set up, publish the listing and launch your product!

Optimize Your Listing

Optimizing your new listing is essential for showing in searches and driving sales. Here are a few steps to optimize your listing:

  1. Product Title: Your product title should describe your product, highlight key features and benefits, and include relevant keywords to help improve search visibility. It needs to be clear and concise.
  2. Product Images: High-quality images that show the product and its features can help increase conversions. Use several images and consider using lifestyle images or user generated content to showcase the product in use.
  3. Product Description: Your product description should provide detailed information about the product, including specs and features. It’s helpful to use bullet points so that customers can quickly find the features they’re looking for. Use keywords that fit your product and market positioning to help rank in more searches.
  4. Keywords: Conduct keyword research to identify relevant keywords and phrases that potential customers may use when searching for products like yours. Use these keywords in your product title, description, and product features.
  5. Product Reviews: Encourage customers to leave product reviews, as positive reviews can help increase conversions and improve search visibility. Respond to negative reviews and address any customer concerns to improve customer satisfaction and trust.

In addition to these optimizations, look at how your pricing, shipping, and customer service compares to others in the industry. You can differentiate yourself with competitive pricing, fast shipping, and quality customer service, driving more sales over time. Amazon’s advertising tools like sponsored products can help you reach a wider audience.

Selling private label products on Amazon can be an exciting and profitable business venture. By investing the time up front to research, develop, and launch a brand that appeals to your market you can build a successful business. The key to success is thorough research, a reliable and trustworthy supplier, and continuous optimizations of your listings. Experiment and try new things, you may be surprised at what brings users to your listing! Remember, the journey won’t always be easy, but with dedication and hard work the payoff can be significant.
